Our Bodies Stay Home, Our Imaginations Run Free

By Lora L. Hyler

Seven-year-old Maya is sad due to all of the changes in her life caused by the coronavirus pandemic. She misses in person school, her classmates, teachers, playdates and family visits.
Her 8th birthday is coming up. She is very worried that she won't be able to celebrate her birthday!

Setting: Our Bodies Stay Home, Our Imaginations Run Free is designed to help children cope with the impact of the pandemic. Inspired by an Emory Global Health Institute competition, Lora L. Hyler accepted the challenge to create a body of work for children that could be shared around the world. Mental health experts are concerned about the possible lasting effects of coronavirus. The book written for children ages 6-12 features a fictional 7-year-old girl, Maya and her brother, 10-year-old Bryan as they adjust to a life without a classroom and teachers, or face-to-face interaction with their friends, grandparents, or extended family.Seven-year-old Maya is sad due to all of the changes in her life caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Age Range: Our Bodies Stay Home, Our Imaginations Run Free is for children ages 6-12.
Book Lessons: Kindness runs through the veins of this book.
Maya starts out sad about her changed life. As her family walks through the neighborhood, they are overwhelmed by the messages of kindness scrawled on sidewalks, and posted in windows. The messaging grows daily.
Maya comes up with a plan to continue to spread kindness. Staying six feet away, she and her neighbor bring joy to every passerby by enthusiastically complimenting them on their masks and wardrobes during their walks by her home.
Maya laments not doing enough. With her mom and family, they begin to make masks to give to those who need them.
Kindness cannot be bottled. Kindness flows. On Maya's big 8th birthday, we see the community has rallied to throw her a safe birthday party by motorcade! Motorists passing nearby and folks from many streets over, spot the caravan, lifting spirits for blocks and blocks.
Since this book was first published in July, I have received regional and national publicity, along with beautiful reviews. I’m humbled by the outpouring of accolades. My gift to the world is a book to help children cope with coronavirus.
